New Downloadable Catalogs Available

PUMP-FLO™ Solutions has recently added four new pump eCatalogs to download. The availability of Bell & Gossett’s turbine pump line, Christensen Pumps, Goulds Pumps Vertical Turbine, and Red Jacket Water Products catalogs has been anxiously anticipated.

These new additions increase the catalog count to 90 catalogs available online through the downloadable catalog page at the Engineered Software Website. Pump catalogs are a central feature of the PUMP-FLO, PIPE-FLO® and Flow of Fluids software programs.

The creation of an Electronic PUMP-FLO Catalog is a team effort between Engineered Software and the pump manufacturer. If you would like to see a manufacturers' catalog added, please email info@pump-flo.com or call 800-786-8545.

ESI Pump Systems Matter™ Sponsorship

PUMP-FLO Solutions parent company, Engineered Software, Inc. announces the proud sponsorship of the educational organization, Pump Systems Matter (PSM). PSM initiative was launched by the Hydraulic Institute in 2004 as an industry-led market transformation from one of equipment first costs to one based on system life cycle costs. PSM is focused primarily on pump systems education and outreach, addressing energy savings opportunities, and total cost of pump ownership.

“Pump Systems Matter allows us to be further involved in helping to reduce energy consumption and cost among end-users…,” said Ray Hardee, Chief Engineer for Engineered Software. “PIPE-FLO software falls right in line with what they are doing, and we thought there was no better platform than energy reduction and system efficiency.”

Department of Energy studies have shown that better system design and more effective application of pumps can usually save 20% or more in energy costs and represent a large, frequently overlooked savings opportunity. With recent increases in energy costs, Engineered Software aims to offer users valuable, bottom-line oriented energy savings opportunities, through the full understanding of fluid piping systems.

Engineered Software has many software packages that aid in the designing and simulation of fluid piping systems, and all have the common application of lowering energy consumption, improving the bottom-line of system operation, while providing a clear picture of the total piping system.

“By getting people to understand and actually see how their piping system is operating, users can make more accurate changes to improve their situation using PIPE-FLO Software. It’s all about educating the industry and ESI is now a part of the solutions,” Hardee added.

Gaining a Clear Picture of Pump Operation

Our Chief Engineer, Ray Hardee, P.E. and consultant, Mike Volk, P.E. have collaborated on a feature article published in the August 2007 issue of Power Engineering magazine. The following is an excerpt from the article.

Often things are not as they first seem, especially when one is trying to determine how a pump system is operating. That’s why it is often difficult to troubleshoot a fluid piping system that is experiencing problems and to arrive at a plan to correct the trouble. The best way to identify problems within a system and to make the corrections is first to have a clear picture of how the system operates.

Developing an educated guess is one option to solving system problems, but that ability comes only with years of experience. Simple trial and error may be another option. Either way one thing is certain when a piping system is required for continued operation in a power plant: system failure is not an option.

Fluid piping analysis software makes it possible to simulate the operation of the total piping system. Once the computer simulation reflects the piping system’s actual operation, plant personnel can try various options on the piping system model without fear of failure.

Personnel at a cogeneration plant discovered just how helpful such software can be.
